John S. Ames married Elizabeth Reed and they had at least seven children. He served in the military in Kansas after the Civil War. The family lived in Peoria County, Illinois in 1880. Elizabeth had several brothers (William W. Reed and Nathan L. Reed) and a sister (Josie Reed Sutton Hower). Her son Charles spent 1886-1888 working in Nebraska.
